Bureau of Planning and Sustainability offers $25,000 in small grants for waste prevention and recycling in Portland

Portland, Ore - Neighborhood, community and nonprofit groups that are committed to recycling and waste prevention can apply for a grant from the City of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

Groups have the opportunity to support or expand green efforts through the grant.  Examples of eligible waste prevention and recycling projects include purchasing durable dishes for offices or events, or buying necessary equipment for a tool library or neighborhood composting area.

The grant's goal is to offer neighborhood, community and nonprofit organizations money for projects or items that will help them overcome barriers to waste prevention and increase recycling while educating the community.

"Portlanders at the neighborhood level are the ones out in front on recycling," said Portland Mayor Sam Adams. "This grant program is just one more tool for those community leaders to extend their success and keep innovating."

Program funding is part of an initiative of the Portland Recycles! Plan for outreach and education around increased waste prevention and recycling in the Portland community.

The total amount available is $25,000.  Grant amounts range from $500 to $2,500 and will be awarded through a competitive process.  Grant proposals will be reviewed by an advisory committee made up of Bureau of Planning and Sustainability representatives.

Proposals must be received by 4 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2009.
