Portland is proud of its parks and its legacy of preserving open spaces. In fact, it has the highest parks-per-capita ratio of all cities in the United States. Parks and Greenspace planning dates back to the early 20th century when John Charles Olmsted, adopted step-son of Frederick Law Olmsted, prepared his 1903 Report to the Portland Park Board. The report inspired generations of urban greenspace adovocates. In 1995, voters in the Portland metropolitan region passed a regional bond measure to acquire valuable natural areas for fish, wildlife, and people. Ten years later, more than 8,200 acres of ecologically valuable natural areas had been purchased and permanently protected for the public.
